Enneagram Weekend Workshop with Live Panels

This workshop has filled. Please contact Barbara via email to be added to a waiting list: barbara@whitesideworkshops.com.

Many of you have explored the Enneagram through online assessments, books, talking with others, and attending lectures. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, there is great benefit in seeing and listening to live panelists describe how they discovered their Type and how they use this self-awareness for their own psychological, relational, and spiritual growth.

The Enneagram is a system which describes nine distinct and fundamentally different patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, called Types.

Enneagram Type cannot be determined by observing behaviors in yourself or others. It is by understanding the thinking and feeling patterns that motivate these behaviors that we further our journey of self-discovery. Once we learn to self-observe our habitual patterns and reactivity, we begin to see ourselves more clearly, and come to understand that others are coming from their own Type bias. With this compassionate understanding of ourselves and others, we gain the insights necessary for personal and relational growth.

With a strong foundation in western psychology, and grounded in several wisdom traditions East and West, the Enneagram is an extraordinary and dynamic system to help us on our journey of transformation.

Over this weekend we will hear directly from nine groups of live panelists about their experience of their Enneagram Type and what it means to use this understanding to improve relationships and to feel a deeper connection to themselves, others, life and spirit.

DATES: Saturday and Sunday, October 31 (home on time for trick-or-treaters!) and November 1

TIME: Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

The Enneagram for Therapists, Coaches & Spiritual Directors - ETC Continuation Series

Prerequisite: Having attended Barbara's or David's Enneagram workshops, active work in a helping profession, and a desire to use the Enneagram in your practice. A phone interview will be scheduled before acceptance into this group.

This workshop is being offered in collaboration with David Daniels, MD, clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford Medical School, adjunct faculty at Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, a leading developer of the Enneagram system of nine personality styles, and co-author of the best seller, The Essential Enneagram. 12 units of CEU credit available for MFT's and LCSW's.

David Daniels and Barbara Whiteside come together to present this powerful system for generating personal change, healing, and development "from the inside out." The Enneagram system as taught in the Narrative Tradition brings together theory with process to create remarkable change in our lives and the lives of our clients. We will focus on identifying, understanding, and working more effectively with clients of each Enneagram style. This advanced course is designed for those who want to deeply understand the core structure, belief, and adaptive strategy for each type and how to facilitate personal and relationship transformation. Case studies will be explored, with an emphasis on how our point bias is affecting the work and how to more effectively engage with our clients.

DATES: September 17th, October 15th, November 19th, December 17th

TIME: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

COST: $400 (4 three-hour sessions) $50 charge for CEU credits

Enneagram Study Group -- FULL (email to be waitlisted)

Pre-requisite: Knowing your type and having taken the Basic Enneagram Workshop or having a working understanding of the Enneagram.

Many of you have expressed interest in deepening your understanding and work with the Enneagram. This small group, with representation of each Type, will meet monthly to delve into aspects of the Enneagram that interest you (I have some ideas too!) and investigate some of the less obvious dimensions of the Enneagram. We may read and discuss short writings from some of the more obscure but seminal authors such as Naranjo and Gurdjieff, as well as authors on related topics. We will learn body and meditation practices to unblock our hearts and move towards greater liberation. I hope that the group will build the trust necessary to share our own struggles and strengths as we work to free ourselves from the fixation of our type.

DATES: Thursday mornings - January 31, February 28, March 28, April 25 and May 16
TIME: 9:00 am to 11:30 am

COST: $250

REGISTRATION: Please contact Barbara if you are interested in joining the group barbara@whitesideworkshops.com

The Enneagram of Relationship

Barbara hopes to offer this workshop again soon.

Relationship can be our greatest joy; it can also be our greatest challenge. It is with our family members, our partners and our colleagues that we often find ourselves most at a loss as to how to relate and communicate with them. Come to this lively panel series where panelists will be brought in of each Type along with their spouse, partner, child, or colleague, and will share with you their direct experience of what it is like to be in relationship with one another.

With the exception of the first evening, which will be an Introduction that you won't want to miss (mandatory for newcomers to the Enneagram), the remaining evenings will be dedicated to exploring the specific type in relationship with others. I will have panelists speak about their Type, and then will have their partners, spouses, children (teens and young adults), or colleagues join them on panel to share what works and doesn't work in relationship with one another, and why.

The Enneagram of Spirituality - the Way of Transformation

Coming again later this year.

The Enneagram is a powerful and dynamic psychological, relational, and spiritual system that describes nine distinct and fundamentally different patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, called Types.

Learning our Enneagram Type launches us on an incredible journey of self discovery. Not only do we develop insight as to the ways we habitually think, feel and behave, we also come to understand our motivations, our strengths and our challenges in relating to others. Type cannot be determined by observing behaviors in yourself or others. It is by understanding what motivates those behaviors that we begin our journey of self discovery.

Grounded in several wisdom traditions East and West, including Christianity, and with a strong foundation in western psychology, the Enneagram is an extraordinary and dynamic guide to help us on our journey of transformation.

Enneagram Instinctual Subtype Workshop with Panels

Workshop Full - Waitlist only

Prerequisite: Having taken Barbara's Basic Enneagram workshop, or having a basic understanding of the Enneagram.

Learning your Enneagram Type is just the beginning. The Enneagram is a complex and highly differentiated system, reflecting the complexity of human beings. The next step is to learn about the Instinctual Subtypes to further explicate Types by turning the nine basic Types into twenty-seven. Learning the Instinctual Subtypes will add an invaluable dimension to your Enneagram understanding. You will discover how each Type is influenced by the Instinctual Subtypes, and how this creates three entirely unique expressions of each Type. Discovering your Type gave you insight into what your focus of attention is and what motivates you. With this workshop, you will see how your type actually manifests in the world, and in relationship, often in predictable ways.

Through the Narrative Tradition, live panelists will speak to the Self Preservation, Sexual/Attraction, and Social/Affiliative instincts that we all share as human beings. Then you will discover your stacking order, showing what Instinctual Subtype dominates over the others and where you may have a blind spot. You will leave with tools that will help you bring into balance these three energies.

Drawing from the work of Claudio Naranjo as interpreted by Beatrice Chestnut in her book, "The Enneagram System's 27 Personality Subtypes", as well as the work of Helen Palmer, David Daniels, M.D., Russ Hudson and Don Riso, we will take a look at each author's understanding of the Instinctual Subtypes, and what each bring to the table that can help us to create more healthy relationships and inner joy.

DATE: Saturday, November 2nd

TIME: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

COST: $155* (includes breakfast, binder of handouts, Bea Chestnut's book, "The Enneagram System's 27 Personality Subtypes". *10% discount for couples, partners or friends registering together

LOCATION: Barbara's home - 635 Nevada Ave., San Mateo, CA 94402

Expanding Our Understanding of Type: Defenses, Wings and Connecting Points

Coming again soon.

Prerequisite: Having taken Barbara's Basic Enneagram workshop, or having an understanding of the Enneagram.

When we begin to observe ourselves closely, we see how compulsive our Type is. In this workshop, we will see what our focus of attention is, what we identify with, and what we avoid. We will explicate the Defenses of each Type, bringing into conscious awareness the lost parts of ourselves. We will look at the Security and Stress points (also called the Point of Integration and Disintegration) and the Wings as a means to expand our souls and the ways in which we live in the world.

To work more effectively with our Enneagram Types, we need to develop the ability to observe ourselves with honesty and compassion. In order to do this, we will learn Attention Practices that help us develop the Inner Observer that helps us see the habits of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are particular to our Type. With this knowledge, we can begin to improve relationships and see what prevents us from healthy relating and inner joy.

Whole Parents, Whole Children: Parenting From Our True Nature at the IEA Conference in Burlingame

Saturday, July 26th, 12:30 to 2:30 pm

Conscious parenting means getting our judging mind out of the way by becoming curious about ourselves as parents, and curious about our children. Our type influences our ability to see others clearly, including our children.

We cannot connect with our children until we connect with our essential self. This means looking with humility at the positive aspects we identify with, and compassion at the not-so-positive ones we deny. It means integrating the head, heart, and body to become whole people, whole parents.

From enlightened awareness of our strengths and limitations, our reactivity is reduced as we learn to pause and sense our way back to our still heart, making our parenting decisions from there. Discipline, which means at its root "to teach", takes on a different look when it comes from consciously responding to an upset rather than reacting to it.

With a Panel of Parents of all Nine Types, we will explore strengths and limitations, challenges and triggers, and how to work with type bias. Each panelist will describe a "parenting moment" when they broke free of their habit/pattern, allowing something whole and substantial to come forth in the relationship.

This workshop is open to all. Though the focus will be parenting, the principles apply to all relationships.

The Enneagram of Parenting

Seeing Ourselves and Our Family Clearly: A Roadmap Toward Healthier Family Dynamics.

Family is a great petri dish for exploring Enneagram Type dynamics. Here in this crucible of intimate relatedness, we often experience our best and our worst selves. Patterns can be difficult to break when we are caught in a negative feedback loop. When triggered, we can fall into the habits of our type and begin to relate from that bias to our family members. Our family members respond from their own point bias and thus begins the negative feedback loop.

How can we break free of these old habits and bring something fresh to our intimate, often daily communications with loved ones? Seeing them and ourselves clearly and compassionately is the first step on the road to healthier family dynamics. Next we need to find a way to become truly present with the person, the situation and ourselves. Then we need to modify our communication style to fit the person we are interacting with. And this is just the beginning...

RECORDING: Barbara received excellent reviews for her presentation about family, communication and the Enneagram made at the International Enneagram Association Conference in San Francisco on August 1, 2010. You can purchase ($15) a recording of her presentation on CD by clicking here (Select IEA10-348 Seeing Ourselves and Our Family Clearly).
